Large Self Catering House: The Old Mine House - Dartmoor, Devon
The Old Mine House is a Devon holiday adventure. Built in 1855 for the captain of the copper mine, the fully renovated, Grade II listed country dwelling hides in nine tranquil wooded acres of Dartmoor National Park , a few miles north of Plymouth. Perfect for large groups - seven bedrooms - sleeping eighteen - twenty - Selfcatering. The imposing house, reached by a discreet 600-yard country track assuring privacy, is surrounded by rambling farmland, overlooking sleepy Horrabridge on the River Walkham (known for its ancient bridge). Badgers, buzzards plus owls daily frequent the wild grounds, as well as the occasional fox, deer in addition to heron. From the gate, the view to nearby Cornwall is outstanding; from the door, an idyllic woodland footpath crosses the stream and winds through bluebell glades towards rugged moor, or, past the large manor and across the meadow, to emerge at the friendly village pub. Private and safe for youngsters, complementing a large meadow, with its badminton net and shaded pond, is an adventure play area beside this large house comprising of swings, tree house, and Wendy house. Goats, ducks, geese, chickens and inquisitive guinea-fowl graze the quiet pastoral grounds. Hammocks, summerhouse, apple trees, garden seats, rhododendrons, wetland nature area, log cabin/sauna, scenic lookout tower, covered permanent barbeque/picnic area complete a picture of rural relaxation. This large house is an ideal base for Dartmoor, both Devon coasts and Cornwall, with the EDEN PROJECT just 40 miles away. Much closer are to be found river walks, cycle trails, NT properties, clean South Hams beaches, spectacular Lydford Gorge, and most activity resources including quad-biking, cycling, climbing/abseiling, and river canoeing on the Tamar. A wealth of reference information is available in this large house and there's also a tandem-bicycle for guests' use - great for the beautiful four mile reservoir perimeter road just over the hill. Suitable for large or small groups, the spacious seven-bedroom capacity comfortably sleeping sixteen - twenty maximum; an optional winterised cabin (with bunk beds and a great view!) further enhances sleeping arrangements. Beds are mainly a mix of doubles in addition to singles, with duvets, linen plus extra blankets all included, in centrally-heated plus carpeted rooms (some with hand wash basins), in addition to radios, magazines, a few televisions and even hot water bottles. One bedroom is downstairs; there are three bathrooms and toilets. The high-ceilinged main lounge, enhanced by books, pictures, a large 28-inch colour Free view television in addition to radio/CD player, offers comfortable sofas around a restored Victorian slate fireplace for winter log fires. A second very cosy lounge with television/VCR/D.V.D in addition to video library offers more relaxation space enabling your group to separate if desired. The large, well-equipped kitchen offers a five-ring ceramic double oven, microwave oven, fridge-freezers, coffee machine, toaster, Kenwood mixer, blender .; dishwasher, washing machine plus electric iron are also to hand. Hotplates plus food warmers are to be found in the spacious, atmospheric chandeliered dining room, where everyone can eat around one large dining table.
